Thirsk Rugby Club - Sowerby Brownies and Guides...

2nd August, 2025.

It may sound like an unlikely combination but the 1st Vale of Mowbray Guides and 2nd Thirsk Brownies have recently had a visit from Thirsk Rugby Club to complete the Girlguiding North East England Love Rugby challenge badge.

Club coach Martin Sargent was on hand to supervise proceedings and commented :

“When I was approached by Jasmin one of the unit leaders asking if the club could help the local Guides and Brownies unit gain a challenge badge for Rugby I was more than happy to lend a hand.

Both groups of girls really bought into the introductory Rugby sessions, showing some real focus and loads of enthusiasm, by the end of the 1 hour sessions both groups took part in an inter-group touch rugby game, I was really impressed with the quality of the passing and movement around the pitch in the games scoring some really good team try’s.”

In a regional initiative England Rugby and Girlguiding North East England are coming together to inspire girls through non-contact rugby and related activities, emphasizing fun, fitness and inclusion.

Opportunities for sport are important to girls, who can often feel limited by perceptions of which sports are ‘for girls’.

Women’s rugby is increasing in popularity with every international tournament and grassroots game, and both organizations want to inspire the rugby players and fans of the future.
